    More Information:

[Sir Walter Scott, translator]. Gottfried Augustus Bürger. The Chase and William and Helen. Edinburgh: Mundell and Son. for Manners and Miller, 1796. First edition. Quarto (10.375 x 8.125 inches; 264 x 206 mm). v, [1, blank], 41, [1, blank] pages. Contemporary parchment backstrip over marbled paper boards, spine lettered in black; text untrimmed. Some rubbing, thumbsoiling to spine, some edgewear to boards. Endleaves foxed; text toned and mildly thumbsoiled and worn; bookplates on front, inkstamp on verso of title-page. A later fair copy of a letter from Scott to Erskine inserted into a mounted envelope (mounted onto the rear pastedown). Very good. The first published work of Sir Walter Scott.

[Together with:] William Erskine (later Lord Kinneder, Scottish Barrister). Autograph Letter, Signed. [No place, but likely Edinburgh]: 19 Sept. 1796. One quarto sheet, mounted onto the front pastedown (8.25 x 8 inches; 211 x 202 mm.). Creased, with some soiling. Very good. Addressed to Messrs. Manners and Miller. "Gentlemen / On the part of my friend Mr. Walter Scott / I accept of the offer contained in your letter of this / day's date. The two first articles of your letter are / necessarily [?] the especial part of the bargain. / I am / Gentlemen / Your most humble servant / William Erskine". Apparently this letter was part of the negotiation for Scott's translation of this title with the publishers. Erskine was a close friend and literary advisor to Scott. An excellent association.
