An Early Printing of Le Morte d'Arthur

[Sir Thomas Malory]. [Le Morte d'Arthur]. The most ancient and famous history of the renowned prince Arthur King of Britaine, wherein is declared his life and death, with all his glorious battailes against the Saxons, Saracens and pagans, which (for the honour of his country) he most worthily atchieved. As also all the noble acts, and heroicke deeds of his valiant knights of the Round Table. Newly refined, and published for the delight, and profit of the reader. London: William Stansby for Jacob Bloome, 1634. Sixth edition overall of the most important and influential book of Arthurian legend. Three parts in one small quarto volume. Approximately 7 x 5.25 inches. Black letter text. Three separate title-pages. Two (out of three) woodcut frontispieces depicting the Knights of the Round Table. Bound in contemporary full brown calf, boards double-ruled in black, four raised bands on spine. Binding worn, spine chipped, text toned and somewhat soiled, with ink notations and markings throughout. Final leaf missing lower (blank) half with no loss of text. Bookplate residue on front free endpaper. With the armorial bookplate of John Trotter. A very good copy of this early edition of Le Morte d'Arthur. This was the final edition to be published before the nineteenth-century, with its text modified to suit Jacobean taste.
