A Scarce First Edition of a Notorious
    Literary Forgery

[Percy Bysshe Shelly, spuriously attributed to]. Letters of Percy Bysshe Shelley. Introductory essay by Robert Browning. London: Edward Moxon, 1852. First edition. Octavo. [viii], [166], [2, ads] pages. With eight pages of ads inserted between the front endleaves. Publisher's full purple cloth, boards decoratively stamped in blind, spine lettered in gilt, and ruled in blind. Spine sunned to brown, some rubbing to binding, hinges starting, two catalogue descriptions affixed to front pastedown and half-title, embossed bookshop stamp to front free endpaper, ink autograph sentiment of C. Bathurst Woodman on the half-title: "Subsequently discovered to be Literary Forgeries!! - The work has been suppressed as far as practicable by the Editor and is now very rarely to be met with. C. Bathurst Woodman". Overall, a near fine example of a fascinating phony. Housed in cloth clamshell case.
"An ingenious forgery perpetuated by an impostor, claiming to be the son of Lord Byron. Two genuine letters, which happened to be in Moxon's hands, were included. The fraud was discovered, to the chagrin of Browning and Moxon, who at once destroyed all obtainable copies of the book." (Granniss, Grolier Shelley 127).
    Wise Shelley, p. 74.
