    Description

[Nicholas Chorier]. Les Meursius François, ou L'Académie des dames. Cythere: 1782 [but most likely Paris: Cazin, circa 1800]. First Cazin edition. Three sixteenmo volumes bound in two (5.125 x 3.25 inches; 130 x 180 mm.). 184; 156, 184 pages; all three half-titles present; engraved frontispiece and twelve plates by Elluin after Borel, as called for. Contemporary tree calf, boards double-ruled in gilt, spines tooled in gilt in compartments, with red gilt morocco lettering labels, and black circular gilt morocco numbering labels, gilt board-edges and marbled endleaves. The second volume (comprising volumes II and III) is rebacked, preserving the original spine. Some rubbing to spines, some wear to corners, some toning, foxing in text, several plates foxed. Very good. Cohen de Ricci 240. Originally published circa 1660 and attributed to a maid of honor in the court of Lisbon then translated into Latin by the Dutch scholar Meursius, but it was actually written by Nicholas Chorier, a lawyer who was in the employ of Louis XIV of France. This title was printed several times, always under a false imprint, due to its scandalous nature (as in the case of this edition). This Cazin edition is one of the most prized, due to the excellent illustrations.
