    Description

[Negro Inferiority Slavery Abolition Life in the South]. [Mary Lowell Putnam]. Record of an Obscure Man. Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1861. First edition. Twelvemo. An important abolitionist piece, arguing against the consideration of the Negro as an inferior race, in the guise of a memoir of a traveler who discussed the issue in the South. This is the rare first edition, having 216 pages versus the 228 pages of the later 1861 edition. Publisher's original cloth binding. Spine sunned and leaning. Corners and spine ends bumped and showing with some loss at spine tail. Some rubbing, soiling and edgewear to extremities. Some toning to endpapers. Good.
