Wright, R. Chiswell, 1675; London: Printed by Richard Hodgkinson, 1672 (second part title-page). Third edition in English, "now newly Corrected and Amended." Two parts in one volume, small folio in fours (10.75 x 7 inches; 275 x 175 m.). [8], 1-137, [5], 138-273 leaves. Title vignette ornaments; decorated initials; engraved tail-piece. )(-)()(, A-3Y, 3Z. Later half calf over marbled paper-covered boards; edges of calf ruled in blind. Rebacked; new spine ruled and decorated in gilt with dark red spine label. Later (possibly contemporary with rebacking) endpapers. All edges trimmed. Edge wear, corners bumped; older calf fairly heavily chipped at edges; chipping, rubbing to paper; small crack at one corner of spine label. Edges of text block darkened, somewhat roughened. Hinges repaired, front hinge now beginning to split. Bottom edges of pages frayed with some damp staining; regular yellowing of pages, spot soiling; wormholing near bottom margin throughout majority of text block, largest and most noticeable track extends approximately twenty pages from leaf 60 to 80. Tear from bottom of leaf 59 extends up into last two paragraphs of text. Small repair at top edge of second part title-page. A good binding housing a very good text block. Ownership inscription of George Noblett on title-pages, dated July 10th, 1798 at Cork. A third edition of the first translation of Cervantes' text. "Shelton was the first person to translate Doon Quixote into English," first published in 1612. "The signs of haste in the translation, which took Shelton only forty days, did not hide his verve, command of Spanish, and knowledge of Spain" (DNB). ESTC R11453.

    Note: Leaf 20 misnumbered "10," 39 is "38," 87 is "86," 122 is "124," 197 is "167," 206 is "207," no 215 (leaf not lacking), two leaves numbered "244," 270 is "271." Gathering Qq misfolded, leaves 149 and 150 transposed.
