Bloomsbury Group Members' Copy of Molière Biography

[Lytton Strachey] [Jean-Léonor Le Gallois de Grimarest]. Vie de Mr. de Molière. Amsterdam: Henri Desbordes, 1705.

Second edition, reviewed and corrected. Twelvemo. 200 pages, plus 8 page index. Frontispiece etching.

Decorative printed paper over boards. Handwritten paper title label glued at spine head. Extremities somewhat rubbed and lightly soiled. Spine and corners show slight loss. Spine and label toned. Endpapers and edges toned with foxing throughout. A few minor bumps and tears to the text. Large bookplate of Lytton Strachey on the inside front board with the much smaller bookplate of Roger Senhouse positioned below. Very good condition.

This charming little volume came from the shared library of two members of the Bloomsbury Group. Strachey was primarily known as a writer and critic, while Senhouse would work as a publisher at Secker and Warburg. They shared a secret sado-masochistic relationship in the 1930s which was only revealed with the publication of Strachey's letters much later.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
