An Excellent Copy of Tonson's Ovid with Beautiful Engravings

[John Dryden, Alexander Pope, et al., translators]. Ovid. Ovid's Metamorphoses in Fifteen Books. Translated by the most Eminent Hands. London: Jacob Tonson, 1717. First edition with these translations. Folio. Approximately 18.25 x 10.5 inches. [vi], [xxiii], 548 pages. With engraved title-page, engraved portrait of the Princess of Wales, and sixteen engraved plates (each dedicated to a different noblewoman) inserted throughout. Bound in contemporary full brown paneled calf, covers ruled in blind, spine tooled in blind, with burgundy gilt morocco lettering label. Rebacked, preserving most of the original spine. Some wear and damage to binding, some soiling to boards, spine worn at edges and joints and hinges cracking (yet still solid), some minor dampstaining or foxing in text, some offsetting from plates. A few neat ink corrections in text in Preface. Bookplate. Overall a very good copy with clean text.

    More Information:

This book is Ovid's "most important work. It is composed in hexameter verse; the material is borrowed from Greek and (to a lesser extent) from Roman sources, being a collection of legends of transformations... extending from chaos to the apotheosis of Caesar." (Harper's Dictionary of Classical Literature, 1151).

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
