    Description

The First English Edition of The Last of the Mohicans

[James Fenimore Cooper]. The Last of the Mohicans. A Narrative of 1757. By the Author of "The Spy," "The Pioneers." &c. &c. In Three Volumes. London: John Miller, 1826. First English edition, issued about a month after the first American edition. Three twelvemo volumes. Approximately 6.75 x 4 inches. [2], xi, [1, blank], 287, [1, blank]; [4], 276; [2], 295, [1, blank] pages. With half-titles in Volume I and II (Volume I was not issued with half-title, but this copy was bound with the half-title of Volume III bound into Volume I, so this copy collates complete). Contemporary half brown calf over marbled boards, spines ruled, tooled, and lettered in gilt. Bindings are worn, hinges are starting, text is toned, dampstained, and soiled, with creases to upper corners, a few lower corners chipped (not affecting text), a gathering in Volume III is a bit loose. Still, a good copy.

    More Information:

This is the second and most famous of the Leatherstocking Tales, and the first in which the scout Natty Bumppo was made the symbol of all that was wise, heroic and romantic in the lives and characters of the white men who lived in the American wilderness. This novel glorified for many generations of readers, both in America and abroad, some aspects of American life that were unique to our cultural history.
