Extra-Illustrated with Title Pages from Twenty-Nine Different Editions and Eighty-Two Illustrations

[Hugh Thompson, illustrator]. Oliver Goldsmith. The Vicar of Wakefield. Illustrated by Hugh Thompson, Containing an Original Autograph letter by Him with a Sketch of Dr. Primrose and Extra-Illustrated with Original Examples from 29 Different Editions of the Work, Together with their Respective Title Pages. With a preface by Austin Dobson and illustrated throughout with line drawings by Hugh Thompson. London and New York: Macmillan & Co., 1890. One quarto volume expanded to two by the insertion of eighty-two illustrations from other versions of the work and with the title pages from twenty-nine different versions, including the first illustrated edition of 1780. Also inserted are a two-page foldout engraving of "Dr. Johnson reading the manuscript of the Vicar of Wakefield" from the painting by E.M. Ward, and an autograph letter signed from Thompson to the compiler of this set with a fine original pencil drawing by Thompson. Bound in full burgundy crushed morocco by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, boards and spines ruled in gilt, spine lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, gilt board edges and turn-ins. Professionally rebacked with the spines retained, bookplate in each volume of author Ethel Louise McLean, else a fine clean copy. This is a monumental undertaking; it covers most, if not all, of the illustrated editions of the Vicar from 1780 through 1911 and also includes playbills, magazine appearances, and other bits of ephemera. A very valuable resource for anyone studying the illustration history of the Vicar of Wakefield.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
