    [Horace Walpole, Earl of Orford] A Catalogue of the Royal and Noble Authors of England, With Lists of their Works. Strawberry Hill: [Horace Walpole,] 1758. Krown & Spellman retail: $750. First Edition, first state. 8vo. 2 vols. [6],viii,219,[1],[3]; [2],215,[1],[6]p. Contemporary calf, gilt rules, gilt spines, title labels, spines rubbed, ends off, hinges cracked, marbled endpapers, armorial bookplate "R. S(pencer)."; old signature of the "E: Marlborough" on t.p.s, no half-titles? Darkly imprinted with resulting offsetting. Frontis, Strawberry-Hill vignettes on t.p.s Reading on A2v, line 3 "to be partial." From the Krown & Spellman Collection.

    More Information: Horace Walpole (1717-97), despite his historic reputation as a gossip, is best remembered for his letters.  He was an intimate of both Thomas Gray and Thomas Ashton, and established his own printing press at his home, the so-called Gothic "Strawberry Hill"; his first publication there was Gray's Pindaric Odes.  The present offering, although intended to be read in a light-hearted vein, attracted much censure from Walpole's contemporaries.          Hazen, Strawberry Hill, 35:3.
