An Early English Translation of Boccaccio's De Casibus Illustrium Viorum

[Giovanni Boccaccio]. The tragedies, gathered by Jhon Bochas, of all such Princes as fell from theyr estates throughe the mutability of Fortune since the creation of Adam, until his time: wherin may be seen what vices bring menne to destruction, wyth notable warninges howe the like may be avoyded. Translated from Italian into English by John Lydgate. London: John Wayland, [n.d., ca. 1554]. Third or fourth edition of the first English language translation of De casibus illustrium virorum. Folio in sixes. Approximately 12.25 x 8 inches. [ix], 163, 37 folios. This copy without the printed title A Memorial of Such Princes on G4, which had been intended to be added to this work at one time, but eventually appeared elsewhere (this misprint only appears in some copies). Bound by Bedford in full nineteenth-century brown levant morocco, boards ruled and paneled in gilt and blind, gilt floral cornerpieces, spines ruled in gilt and black, with gilt tooling and lettering in compartments, six raised bands, gilt board edges and turn-ins, all edges gilt. Some rubbing to binding, front free endpaper loose, text toned, several leaves with repairs, final two leaves remargined and repaired, with some letters in facsimile. Majority of text quite clean. Near fine. With the bookplate of Willis Vickery, a respected judge and well-known book collector. The woodcut on the recto on A4 depicts scenes from Genesis (the Creation of Eve, the Temptation of Adam, and the Expulsion from Paradise). Lydgate was a great enthusiast of Boccaccio, and his translation is known for being more readable than some other translators of Boccaccio. STC 3178.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
