Extra illuminated color title page, sixty-nine illustrations by John Tenniel, engraved on wood by the Brothers Dalziel. Bound in full dark blue leather panels with black borders and spine, gilt borders, five raised bands on spine, leather title label and gilt designs in compartments, gilt board edges and dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. With a detailed fore-edge painting after Thomas Rowlandson's Harem, depicting a sultan with a lamp, considering a group of naked women. Boards rubbed, small indentations and scuffs, spine bands rubbed, small chips at head of spine, holograph pen gift inscription and pencil writing on front fly-leaf, endpapers and fly-leaves browned, occasional soiling and foxing; nonetheless in very good condition.
