    Description

    First Appearance of "The Raven"

[Edgar Allan Poe]. "The Raven" [appearing in] The American Review: A Whig Journal of Politics, Literature, Art and Science. New York: Wiley and Putnam, 1845. First edition, first printing, of Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven, one of the most celebrated poems in American literature. Two octavo volumes (Vol. I, Numbers I-VI in first bound volume; Vol. II, Numbers I-VI in second bound volume; monthly contents pages and index to each volume in preliminary pages). xvi, 656; xvi, 668 pages. Two engraved portraits in Volume I, one engraved portrait in Volume II.
Contemporary speckled sheep over boards. Black morocco lettering labels stamped in gilt, and ruled in gilt. Brown endpapers, wanting front free endpaper in Volume I. Binding scuffed and lightly worn, but still sound and attractive. Abraded spot where small label was removed to the upper-right corner of each front board. Light to moderate foxing in places, and some pages browned, especially in Volume I, Number I. Dampstain to the bottom and lower fore-edge margins and edges in both volumes. Otherwise, a very good copy.
Published under the pseudonym "Quarles," The Raven (pages 143-145 in Volume I) brought Poe instant literary fame, quickly becoming one of the most discussed and recited poems in the country. The appearance in the American Review is the accepted first edition - the publication in the New York Mirror on January 29, 1845 was printed from advance sheets of the American Review. Volume I also includes Poe's short story "Some Words with a Mummy" (pages 363-370), and his poems "The Valley of Unrest" and "The City in the Sea" (pages 392-393). Volume II includes Poe's poem "Eulalie" (page 79), a review of Poe's Tales (pages 306-309), and the short story "Facts of M. Valdemar's Case (pages 561-565).

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
