First English Edition of Arthur Gordon Pym

[Edgar Allan Poe]. The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket, North America. London: Wiley and Putnam, 1838.

First English edition. Quarto. iv, 252 pages.

Publisher's original brown ribbed cloth with blind-stamped borders over boards. Gilt lettering to spine. Yellow endpapers. Front hinge loose, rear hinge cracked. Missing rear free endpaper. Very slight worming to the lower extremity of the first three leaves. Some wear and dampstaining to boards. Overall, a very good copy of Poe's only novel.

The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym, though generally dismissed at the time, has over the years gathered a diverse array of supporters, from Charles Baudelaire to Jorge Luis Borges. This London edition appeared a couple months after the Harper & Brothers edition. It was printed without Poe's input and lacks the final paragraph.
