    Description

[Edgar Allan Poe.] The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym, of Nantucket, North America. Comprising the Details of a Mutiny, Famine, and Shipwreck, During a Voyage to the South Seas. London: Wiley and Putnam, 1838. First English edition, unauthorized. Octavo. [6], iv, [9]-252 pages (note: free endpapers, or perhaps even flyleaves, affixed to pastedowns). Publisher's boards, one-quarter dark brown cloth over buff paper-covered boards, printed paper spine label; text block edges untrimmed; pale yellow endpapers visible beneath sheets pasted over them. Binding rather beaten, worn, and grubby, as expected with publisher's boards of the period; spine label darkened and largely chipped away; cloth starting to split and fray at joint ends; paper chipped at edges and corners of boards. Joints split, but handing on by sewing and still sound; a bit of scattered foxing to endpapers, with fairly extensive soiling and dampstaining. Text block edges darkened and worn; evidence of dog-earing scattered throughout along with thumbsoiling and spot-staining; library stamps to first few leaves. Good, given the nature of the item. Poe's only complete novel.
