    The First Appearance of Poe's Seminal Poem, "The Raven"

    [Edgar Allan Poe]. The American Review: A Whig Journal of Politics, Literature, Art and Science. New York: Wiley and Putnam, February 1845. First edition, first printing, of one of the most celebrated poems in American literature. Octavo. The February issue only, being volume I, number II of The American Review for 1845. [ii, title leaf], [113]-220 pages. Later smooth brown leather with gilt spine titles inside two raised bands with black borders and rules. Minor wear to the boards. Spine and board edges sunned. Marginal tear to page 159-160, not affecting text. Minor foxing. A few creased corners. Very good condition.

    Published under the pseudonym "Quarles," The Raven (pages 143-145) brought Poe instant literary fame, quickly becoming one of the most discussed and recited poems in the country. The appearance in the American Review is the accepted first edition - the publication in the New York Mirror on January 29, 1845 was printed from advance sheets of The American Review.
