[Edgar Allan Poe]. Complete Run of The Pioneer: a Literary and Critical Magazine. With First Appearances by Poe, Hawthorne, et al. Includes the complete run, Volume I, Number I through Volume I, Number III. Edited by J. R. Lowell and R. Carter. Printed in Boston by Leland and Whiting, 1843. Three octavo issues (10.25 x 7 inches, 260 x 178 mm.). 1-48; [49]-96; [97]-144 pages. Publishers original printed paper wrappers. Numerous illustrations throughout. Some loss to the wrapper of Vol. I, No. I and all issues with wear to the wrappers. Internally very clean and bright. Very good. Housed in a brown cloth chemise and matching slipcase. Despite its short life, The Pioneer was one of the most distinguished periodicals of the time. Lowell was the editor and principal contributor. Other contributors included Hawthorne, Poe, Jones Very, Whittier, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. The illustrations were engraved by Cheney, Andrews, and D. C. Johnston. Perhaps most important is Poe's first printing of "The Tell-Tale Heart".
