    This is a sixth unrecorded variant binding, with "special edition" impressed at the bottom of the spine in place of the publisher's imprint. Unknown to Blanck. Binding C: dark green cloth, no stamping on binding. Special Edition at spine's bottom per Merle Johnson 1932 ed. of American First Editions. BAL 7145 ($160 VG 11/19/00). Unusual volume of historical fiction. Contents are five short stories which first appeared in The Saturday Evening Post: Why the Confederacy Failed; In the Order of Providence; The Troubles of Martin Coy; (The hitherto suppressed narrative of) The Kidnapping of President Lincoln; and The Whims of Captain McCarthy. The book contains four illustrations on plates. Four binding states (no priority known) are listed by Blanck: two in maroon cloth with a cover illustration, and two in green cloth without one.
