[Charles Dickens]. The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit. London: Jan. 1843-July 1844. Original serial parts.More Information: [Charles Dickens]. The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit. His Relatives, Friends, and Enemies. Comprising All His Wills and His Ways. Edited by Boz. London: Chapman & Hall, Jan. 1843-July 1844. Original serial issue. Twenty parts in nineteen, octavo. Six to thirty-two pages of preliminary advertisements; text paginated continuously 1-624; eight leaves of preliminaries follow text of final part. Frontispiece, vignette title-page and thirty-eight additional inserted engravings by H. K. Browne. Original blue-green illustrated paper wrappers. Housed in custom green cloth chemise in three-quarter green morocco two-piece slipcase; spine stamped in gilt with five raised bands. Most parts appear to be rebacked with remains of original backstrip laid down; several sets of wrappers sophisticated, with Parts V, VIII, X, XIV and XVI sporting incorrect rear wrappers. Backstrips chipped head and foot, occasional splitting down middle with regular wear and soiling. Wrappers edge-worn; chipping and some tears, mostly repaired, with one on the back of part ten reopened; soft creasing; some soiling with small splashes, scuffing, some wrappers inked or stamped; abrasion to title on front wrapper of final part, brown speckling to lower front that continues into advertisements. Some rubbing to corners of first leaves of ads, scattered foxing, offsetting and edge wear. Second leaf of front ads in Part I partially torn out, with glue damage to the first leaf; front ads partially lacking in Parts IV, VII, XIV; Parts VIII, XIII have incorrect rear ads inserted; Parts X-XI, XVII lack all rear ads, with fourth and fifth leaf of ads incorrect in Part XI; rear ads partially lacking in Parts III, V, IX, XII, XV-XVI. Plates have numerous orientations, often rebound in reverse order; occasional toning at edges; brown speckling, mostly marginal; some offsetting and edge wear. Occasional thumbsoiling throughout text block; small splash stains; foxing at margins; evidence of dog-earing. Chemise stained around middle with mild soiling, wear to edges, penciling to exterior flap. Slipcase spine faded to brown; corners bumped, with cloth peeling to upper corner; interior leather shredding from corners and edges, worn through at two corners; Charles Dickens 1912 centennial stamp affixed to leather; paper interior spot-soiled with brownish substance. Fair to good. With transposed "£" on vignette title-page. Hatton & Cleaver, pp. 185-212. From the Collection of Jerome P. O'Connor.
