First edition in single volume; second edition overall according to Eckel. Octavo. viii, [3]-526, [2, blank] pages. Frontispiece, vignette title-page and thirty-eight additional inserted plates. Contemporary brownish vertically-ribbed cloth; stamped in blind on front and back; spine stamped in gilt and blind. All edges rough-trimmed. Rebacked with original backstrip laid down; discoloration to spine and edges of boards; scuffing to cloth; rubbing at edges, with some chipping to cloth; upper corners bumped. Crack at inner rear hinge; front free endpaper mostly detached along with half-title and frontispiece. Mild offsetting onto and opposite plates; some browning at edges with scattered spotting to illustrations. Occasional splashing and thumbsoiling to margins, gutters; page 197-8 torn at fore-edge with some loss of text. Good. Eckel pp. 11-16; Gimbel A7. From the Collection of Jerome P. O'Connor.
