[Charles Dickens]. [Phiz]. Hablot K. Browne. Original Engraved Plate, "Mr. Pinch departs to seek his fortune." London: [undated, circa 1842]. Original steel plate from Martin Chuzzlewit.More Information: [Phiz]. Hablot K. Browne. [Original steel plate from Martin Chuzzlewit]. "Mr. Pinch departs to seek his fortune." London: Messrs. Chapman & Hall Ltd., [undated]. Engraved steel plate, numbered 490, housed in custom maroon linen buckram clamshell. Includes pull of the plate set into the lid of the clamshell and a letter of authentication from Chapman & Hall, Ltd signed by Arthur Waugh. Black spine label stamped in gilt. 8.125 x 5 inches; 206 x 126 mm. Tiny rust spots across surface of steel plate, which is somewhat clouded and slightly yellowed. Print and accompanying mat browned, with remains of dried glue at top and bottom of mat. Faint soiling to folds of authentication letter. Minor shelf wear to extremities of clamshell. Fair. Authentication letter on Chapman & Hall Ltd. letterhead reads: "This steel plate... is one of the steel plates engraved by H. K. Browne ('Phiz') for Messrs. Chapman & Hall Ltd., by whom its authenticity is hereby guaranteed." One of the 877 engraved steel plates presented to subscribers of The Nonesuch Dickens, Bloomsbury: The Nonesuch Press, 1938.
