[Together with:] Robert Burns. Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect. In two volumes. Vol. I. Edinburgh: Printed for T. Cadell jun. and W. Davies, London; and William Creech, Edinburgh, [1797]. "A New Edition, Considerably Enlarged." Two volumes. Twelvemo in sixes; octavo. Various paginations. Eight inserted engraved plates in World; portrait frontispiece in Poems. World bound in contemporary calf; gilt fillet decoration around board edges; spine stamped in gilt with four raised bands and dark green and red morocco labels. Marbled endpapers; all edges trimmed and stained pale green. Housed in custom recent brown cloth chemise in one-quarter calf marbled paper-covered slipcase; spine stamped in gilt with five raised bands, dark red and green morocco spine labels. Poems bound in contemporary calf; gilt fillet decoration, gilt and blind ruling at board margins; spine stamped in gilt with five raised bands; red and black morocco spine labels. Marbled endpapers; all edges trimmed and stained yellow. Edge wear, mild scuffing and surface scratches to calf. Wear to hinges. World chipped at corners, head and foot of backstrip; spine cracked vertically down middle, half of each spine label chipped away. Poems spine darkened with spots of soiling at spine labels; some rubbing at corners, head and foot of backstrip. Mild wear to endpapers; splitting starting at inner front hinge of Poems; bookplates on verso of front free of World, recto and verso of Poems. Pages softly toned with occasional mild foxing and offsetting. Poems frontispiece coming detached from bottom; mild foxing to first few leaves of text block; inked manuscript marginalia on pp. 2-3. Minor shelf wear at extremities of chemise and slipcase. World binding good, interior very good. Both books from the library of Charles Dickens, with his bookplate and Gadshill Place sale labels on front pastedowns. From the Collection of Jerome P. O'Connor.
