Edited by "Boz." London: Richard Bentley, 1837-39. First compiled edition. Five volumes, octavo. vii, [1], 636 (first and second volume); viii, 628; vii, [1], 632; iv, 673, [1] pages. Portrait frontispiece and seventy-one additional engraved plates (fifth volume has three more plates than listed on page iv); in-text illustrations. Contemporary half calf stamped in blind on front and back, in gilt on spine with dark green and black morocco spine labels; marbled paper-covered boards. All edges trimmed and speckled brown and red. Moderate shelf wear to bindings; spines faded from medium to light brown; mild wear to paper, with boards exposed at edges and where paper meets calf on fourth volume; damp staining to fourth and fifth volume calf; very light wear to hinges. Slight offsetting opposite plates; minor foxing, thumbsoiling at margins throughout text blocks; some plates in last two volumes bear evidence of damp with light splash soiling at bottom halves; one or two minor tears at page edges, each no more than one inch long. With book label of James St. Clair on all front pastedowns, pasted over decorative book stamp bearing the initials J. S. in all but one volume. Additional J. S. stamped at head of each title-page.
