The Odyssey of Homer. London: Printed for Bernard Lintott, 1725-1726. Each volume a first edition, subscriber's issue (presumably issued before other issues of the first edition). Laid-in is the original subscription slip of "Colonel Hara" (he is named on the List of Subscribers), and signed "A Pope". All volumes uniformly bound in contemporary full mottled calf, covers ruled in gilt, spines ruled and tooled in gilt, with brown morocco lettering labels. Minor wear to bindings, a few joints starting, previous owner's royal (with crown) and noble (with arms) bookplates. A near fine set. Samuel Johnson referred to Pope's translation of the The Iliad as the greatest ever produced in English or any other language.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
