The Odyssey of Homer. London: Printed for Bernard Lintott, 1725-1726. First edition, ordinary folio issue of Iliad, Large Paper issue of Odyssey (Odyssey apparently cut down to match the Iliad). Approximately 11.5 x 7 inches. Complete in eleven quarto volumes, bound in six. Iliad with half-title, portrait of Homer, folding plate of the Siege of Troy in Volume I (bound without five plates on two leaves); Odyssey with half-title and engraved title page (bound without the portrait of Homer). Each volume has privilege leaf, as issued. Bound in contemporary full mottled calf, boards double-ruled in gilt, spine tooled in gilt in compartments, light and dark brown gilt morocco lettering labels, text edges speckled red. Some head- and tailcaps worn and chipped, bindings somewhat worn, a few joints splitting (yet bindings quite solid), a few hinges starting, the third volume of The Iliad has worm damage to the front pastedown and the first 100 pages or so, with some loss. Some foxing, offsetting in text. Previous owner's gift inscription and ink markings on title-pages of first volumes of The Iliad and The Odyssey. Overall, a very good set.
Samuel Johnson referred to Pope's translation of the The Iliad as the greatest ever produced in English or any other language.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
