Bowyer for Bernard Lintot, 1715-1720. Complete in six quarto volumes, each a first edition, subscriber's issue (presumably issued before other issues of the first edition). Approximately 11 x 8 inches. Half-title, frontispiece portrait of Homer, folding map of Greece in Volume I, folding plate of the Siege of Troy in Volume II, Shield of Achilles plate in Volume V. Each volume has privilege leaf, as issued. This edition is embellished with ornamental initials and devices not used in the trade editions. All volumes uniformly bound in contemporary full mottled calf, covers ruled in blind, spines ruled and tooled in gilt, with red morocco lettering labels. All volumes have been rebacked, with reinforced hinges. A near fine set. Lintot gave approximately 750 specially-bound copies of this work to Pope to sell directly to subscribers. Samuel Johnson referred to Pope's translation of the The Iliad as the greatest ever produced in English or any other language. A copy of The First Book of Homer's Iliad Translated by Mr. Tickell (Tonson, 1715) has been bound into volume II.
