First edition, rag paper issue, limited to 175 copies, of which this is number eighty-five, and signed by the author. Octavo (9.25 x 5.75 inches; 234 x 148 mm.). [viii], 303, [1, colophon] pages; signed limitation leaf inserted at front. Publisher's green cloth backstrip over green marbled paper-covered boards, black gilt-lettered black morocco label affixed to the spine; publisher's green slipcase with printed paper label. Cloth spine a bit dull, some rubbing and edgewear to morocco label, one small hole on the spine near the bottom edge; mild sunning to edge of spine; board-edges rubbed; some offsetting to front endleaves; some occasional thumbsoiling in text. Slipcase toned and occasionally soiled at edges; some edgewear to slipcase; upper joints with small areas of splitting; some general rubbing and mild wear to slipcase. Overall, a near fine copy.     More Information: This novel, based on the first bishop of New Mexico, is considered one of Cather's finest works, and has appeared on several lists of the best books of the twentieth century, including the Modern Library's 100 best English-language novels of the twentieth century.
