First edition. Inscribed and signed by Percy on the front free endpaper, "For Mr Emerson Greenaway / with deepest gratitude / From Walker Percy / March 13, 1962." Octavo. 242 pages plus notes about the author and type.

Publisher's red cloth spine over blue-gray paper boards, decoratively stamped in black on the front board and spine, with gilt spine titles. In the original dust jacket. Minor shelf wear to boards, with a couple of corners bumped. Slightly skewed. Short tear to rear hinge. Contents clean. Minor wear to extremities of the jacket, with a few very short closed tears and creases to the edges. A very good copy, rarely found signed.

From Emerson Greenaway's obituary in the April 9, 1990 edition of the New York Times: "Emerson Greenaway, who as director of the Philadelphia public library system from 1951 to 1969 supervised the construction of several branches and the introduction of bookmobiles, died yesterday after a brief illness at a nursing care center in New London, N. H., where he lived. He was 83 years old. Mr. Greenaway had also headed the municipal library systems of Hartford; Fitchburg, Mass.; Worcester, Mass., and Baltimore. He was president of the American Library Association in 1957-58 and was later the chairman of its legislative committee and a member of its 1964 delegation to the Soviet Union." Greenaway worked as the director of the Enoch Pratt Free Library of Baltimore and the director of the Free Library of Philadelphia. The New England Library Association's Distinguished Service Award for Librarianship is called the Emerson Greenaway Award.
