Description

Typed Letter Signed on Upton Sinclair's Stationery Tipped in a First Edition of The Jungle

Upton Sinclair. The Jungle. New York: The Jungle Publishing Co., [1906].

First edition without "Sustainers' Edition" label to front pastedown. Typed Letter Signed by Sinclair, on his stationery, tipped in on front pastedown. Octavo. 413 pages.

Publisher's olive pictorial cloth, with factory vignette stamped in black and white and lettered in white; with Socialist Party symbol of two clasped hands before a map on front board. Top edge stain. Binding solid. Cloth rubbed, extremities worn; a few scratches to boards, very small stains following end of text. White stamping -- particularly the lettering is rubbed; lettering and device on spine rubbed as well. Hinges slightly cracked; joints sound. Bottom has shelf wear with text block rubbed at fore-edge. A few smudges to preliminaries. One-and-one-half-inch closed tear at tail of first page of text. A very good copy with a letter answering a fan's inquiry about signing books. Apparently, he sent two signed bookplates along with said letter; unfortunately, neither one is present here.

The Jungle -- a powerful expose on conditions in the Chicago meat-packing industry -- was both an instant bestseller and a monumentally influential book. Sinclair's graphic descriptions of the dire conditions in the nation's slaughterhouses caused a huge public outcry and led directly to the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act in 1906 and, ultimately, to the creation of the Food and Drug Administration. When Sinclair had difficulty selling his politically-charged manuscript to publishers, he decided to publish it himself, asking payment from readers in advance in order to raise the needed funds.
