Upton Sinclair. The Jungle. New York: The Jungle Publishing Co., [1906]. First edition, "souvenir edition" issue, limited to 100 copies according to a mechanically reproduced letter by publisher J. A. Wayland on Appeal to Reason letterhead laid into the book. Octavo (7.625 x 5 inches; 194 x 128 mm.). [2, blank], [viii], 413, [5, blank] pages; illustrated plate with portrait of the author inserted in front matter. Publisher's smooth red cloth, spine lettered in gilt and stamped in black, front board lettered in black and decoratively stamped in black and gilt, with no cloud background on cover illustration. Binding very lightly soiled; bottom corners softly bumped, upper corners just slightly bent; spine ends lightly pushed. Top edge of text block lightly dust-soiled and with binding error causing bolt connecting four leaves between pages 66 and 75 to remain partially unopened; very light foxing to fore-edge and small faint stain to bottom edge. Near fine. Rare. The only record of sale we could locate was this copy in Christie's Masterpieces of Modern Literature sale in 2002 (lot 272, combined with the following lot).Julius (J. A.) Wayland published Appeal to Reason, a weekly progressive newspaper for the American Midwest. With his editor, Fred Warren, he printed an article by Sinclair about the striking stockyard workers in Chicago in 1904. Based on the paper's readers' reaction, Wayland and Warren solicited a book-length work on the "wage slavery" of the early-twentieth century worker. The Jungle, what Sinclair submitted, was published to acclaim in 1906 and quickly became one of the most significant American social novels. (Anthony Arthur. Radical Innocent. Upton Sinclair. New York: 2006. p. 41).

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.View More Testimonials
As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
HA.com receives more traffic than any other auction house website. (Source: Similarweb.com)
