    Description

Tristan Tzara's Rare sept manifestes dada
    with Illustrations by Francis Picabia
    in Original Wrappers
    , Inscribed by Tzara

Tristan Tzara. sept manifestes dada. quelques dessins de francis picabia. Paris: éditions du diorama, jean budry et co., [1924]. First edition. Text in French. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author, "an Double Dealer / Tristan TZARA / Paris Oct. 1924" on the half-title page. Small octavo. [104] pages. Publisher's original dark purple paste-paper boards, printed paper label affixed to front board and spine. Binding chipped and creased, rear joint chipped, text toned and occasionally soiled. Still, a very good copy of a rare and fragile item. Born from the horrors of World War I, dada was begun by a group of artists and writers who had had enough of reason and logic and they decided to dedicate this movement to nonsense, irrationality and intuition. Although relatively small, the dada movement was very influential (especially to Surrealism), and key figures of the movement included Tzara (one of the primary writers involved), Francis Picabia, George Grosz, Marcel Duchamp (perhaps it most prominent member), and Hans Richter.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
