    First Edition Inscribed To:
"The First Who Has Read It Word for Word..."

Thomas Mann. Doktor Faustus: Das Leben des deutschen Tonsetzers Adrian Leverkühn, erzählt von einem Freunde. Stockholm: Bermann-Fischer Verlag, 1947.
First edition, presentation copy with a few scattered holograph ink corrections, apparently in the author's hand. Inscribed to his secretary on the front free endpaper in German, which translates to: "Hilde Kahn, the First who has read it word for/ word and made it legible to the World./ Pacific Palisades/ 12 Jan. 1948/ Thomas Mann." Publisher's brown cloth with gilt device on front cover and gilt tile on spine. In original dust jacket. Dust jacket with tears and paper losses, soiled, spine panel toned, cellophane tape on verso along fold and tears. Binding very lightly rubbed with faint soiling, upper edge of textblock with light scuffs and scratches; otherwise pages clean. A very good copy of the book with a fantastic provenance.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
