T. S. Eliot. Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. London: Faber and Faber Limited, [1939]. First edition. Book damaged in WWII, with letter of provenance on John & Edward Bumpus letterhead laid-in: "30 xi 42 / Dear Crawley (a Faber sales manager), will you please hand to Mr. Eliot this bomb damaged copy Practical Cats damaged in blitz of Sept. 1940 when a 500-pounds bomb crashed through my room penetrating books like butter - interesting there were two copies, same damage, almost like 'an impression'. Love J. G. W[ilson, Managing Director]." Octavo. Letter one quarto sheet in black ink. 45, [3, blank] pages. Publisher's yellow cloth, front board and spine stamped in red, dust jacket (yellow paper). Dust jacket spine panel toned and chipped, jacket panels chipped and torn at lower edge, lower edge of boards and text with tears all the way through, endleaves foxed. Newspaper clipping of T. S. Eliot affixed to half-title. Some pages roughly opened. Overall, a rough copy, but one with a pretty good excuse. Gallup A.34.a. From a T. S. Eliot Family Collection.
