Samuel Beckett. En attendant Godot. Pièce en deux actes. [Waiting for Godot]. [Paris]: Les Éditions de minuit, 1952 [but really circa 1961]. Original edition, later printing, 23e mille on the rear wrapper with works listed with publication dates as late as 1961; association copy, inscribed by the author on the title-page: "pour / Henri et Josette [Hayden] / ce livre malentendu / bien affectueusement / Sam / Reuil / 1962." Text marked by one of the recipients with marginal brackets on pages 130, 133, 154, 156 and 157 and a three-line annotation in the bottom margin of page 139. Octavo (7.3125 x 4.625 inches; 187 x 118 mm.), final gathering in ten, others in eight. 163, [1] pages (note: pages 1 and 2 are blank). Publisher's perfect binding in original white wrappers, printed in blue and black. Spine very slightly sloped; backstrip faintly browned with some soft vertical creasing; edges very lightly worn; light marginal soiling with a small (three-quarter inches in diameter) circular splash to the lower margin of the front wrapper; scant foxing. Front hinge starting; text slightly toned with some occasional light foxing; marginal tear with some paper loss to leaf with pages 137 and 138. Very good, housed in a custom clamshell case. A significant association copy. From the Marilyn R. Duff Collection.

Samuel Beckett met Henri and Josette Hayden in 1942 while fleeing occupied Paris. Theirs remained one of the most important friendships in Beckett's life. The largest collection of Beckett letters offered in public auction was to the Haydens (over 300 letters, sold once in 2006 and again in 2014).
