Inscribed by Roth to literary critic Van Wyck Brooks and his wife on the front free endpaper, dated before publication: 'June 29, 1961/To Gladys & Van Wyck Brooks-/My best wishes/Philip Roth". Octavo. 630 pages. Publisher's black cloth backstrip over blue cloth boards, spine stamped in gilt and lavender, dust jacket. Jacket spine a bit toned, jacket worn at edges with several tears, mild rubbing and soiling to binding, some offsetting to front endleaves (partially affecting the inscription). Overall, a very good copy with an excellent literary association. From the collection of Donald Kaufmann.
