Pablo Neruda. Typescript of the Essay: "Mariano Latorre, Pedro Prado, y mi Propia Sombra." Carbon typescript, corrected in blue type, of an essay devoted to the Chilean writers Mariano Latorre and Pedro Prado, and the effect of their work on the great poet's own. Twenty-three typed pages on twenty-four quarto sheets (last page is blank) 8.5 x 11 inches (215 x 275 mm.). Paper is somewhat browned and toned, with some holes from staples and general chipping, mostly around the edges. Very good. The essay constitutes the text of an address delivered at the Universidad y Facultad de Filosophia y Educacion (de Chile)-"which more than any other institution of our country I have come to love and respect." It appeared in Anales de la Universidad de Chile, numero 157-160, Ano 129, Ene.-Dic., de 1971.More Information:
Latorre is the primary representative of Chile's "crilloismo" movement, an attempt to portray the lives of its indigenous people. Prado is among the major Latin American writers of the pre-boom period. His expansive philosophical temperament, a sort of castillian grandeur in the eyes of Neruda, and his deep commitment to social concerns, were a deep influence upon the poet. Both writers were friends of Neruda, and throughout long and intimate relationships, each cast his own shadow upon his work. In addition to his appreciations of these two figures whose society exerted formative influence on Neruda, the present essay briefly treats of other writers whose work affected the poet in his development, including Apollinaire and Garcia Lorca.
