Owen Wister. The Virginian. A Horseman of the Plains. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1902. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author in the year of publication: "Barrett Wendell / from / Owen Wister. / June 1902," on an inserted leaf of heavier paper stock. With an autograph letter, signed, by the author to Wendell and dated June 17, 1902; two pages of a bifolium; original transmittal envelope affixed to the rear pastedown. Octavo (7.5 x 5.125 inches; 190 x 130 mm.). [2, blank], [xiv], 504 pages; frontispiece and seven illustrated plates after Arthur I. Keller inserted throughout; lacking six pages of ads mentioned in Graff. Publisher's yellow cloth, spine and front board lettered in red with gilt outline and stamped in red and black; text block bottom edge rough trimmed. Backstrip slightly darkened; spine ends worn with two short closed tears to the crown and light fraying to the bottom end; joints very lightly worn; bottom corners worn and slightly bent; front board with two minor ripples to the lower margin and some faint marginal soiling. Top edge lightly dust-soiled; front hinge cracked, rear hinge cracked with minor glue repair, both still secure; bookplate. Letter folded in half, as mailed, with some splitting along the folds; minor edgewear with minimal paper loss. Very good overall. Graff, 4725; Reese, Six Score 116 ("Although a novel, this book probably created more impressions of what a cowboy was like - even among cowboys - than any other work, fact or fiction.")
