Henry's first book; presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "To / Mrs. E. W. Guyol / With the compli- / ments of / O Henry / Dec 11th 1904." Octavo (7.5 x 5 inches; 190 x 127 mm.). [viii], 344, [2, blank] pages. Publisher's black cloth, front board decoratively stamped in orange and green, spine lettered in orange. Spine sunned and worn; boards worn with some loss to decorative stamping. Hinges repaired; a few gutters overopened; inkstamp and University of Virginia library withdrawal plate on rear pastedown. With the bookplate of distinguished collector, Clifton Waller Barrett, whose collection is housed at the University of Virginia, on the front pastedown. Good but with distinguished provenance. An uncommon presentation from O. Henry, who more often signed using his real name, William Sidney Porter, in favor of his pen name. Chemised in green cloth slipcase. BAL 16270. From the James C.
