Clemens / Mark Twain / [flourish]," with the explanatory note signed by Albert Bigelow Paine on the facing page: "This fly-leaf was signed by Mark Twain in 1906 in anticipation of the present definitive edition of his works." Thirty-seven octavo volumes. Frontispiece portrait by W. H. Bicknell in Volume I. Illustrated with plates by P. Newell throughout - each with descriptive tissue guards printed in red. Title pages printed in black and red. Modern full maroon morocco. Covers decoratively ruled in gilt with central gilt facsimile signature on front covers, spines decoratively tooled in gilt in compartments with two black morocco gilt lettering labels, top edge gilt, others uncut, marbled endpapers. A beautiful set.

    The Definitive Edition of Twain's works is considered to be the most complete of all sets compiled.
