Louis-Ferdinand Céline. Voyage au bout de la nuit. [Journey to the End of the Night]. Paris: Éditions Denoël et Steele, 1932. First edition, top-paper copy, printed on Alfa, limited to 100 numbered copies, this being hors commerce and unnumbered; the Alfa watermark is clearly visible and Alfa is printed on the original backstrip; inscribed by the author, using his family name, on the half-title page: "Au D[--] Bouleau / Amical Hommage / Destouches." Octavo (7.3125 x 4.625 inches; 187 x 118 mm.). 623, [1, printer's note] pages (note: pages 1 and 2 are blank). Recent black morocco, ruled in blind, spine lettered in silver, front board stamped and ruled in silver with two shades of light green inlays; bluish-green head- and tailbands; marbled endpapers, free endpapers folded over flyleaves and glued along the fore edge; original front wrapper and backstrip laid down and inserted (backstrip at rear); three flyleaves at the front (one inserted after the front wrapper) and two at the rear. An attractive and sympathetic pastiche binding; housed in a matching clamshell case, black cloth with a light green morocco backstrip lettered and stamped in silver. Spine just barely askew; text block possibly slightly too bulky for the binding causing the boards to appear splayed, though they are flat. Original wrappers soiled and worn; page edges occasionally worn; at least one margin partially refreshed (gathering six, leaf one). Slipcase very lightly rubbed. Near fine overall. A modernist benchmark; arguably the most advanced point of literary style upon publication. Connolly 74. From the Marilyn R. Duff Collection.
