Ken Kesey. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. New York: The Viking Press, [1962]. First edition, first state with mention of "that fool Red Cross woman" on page nine. Octavo (7.9375 x 5.375 inches; 202 x 137 mm.). [viii], 311, [1, blank] pages. Publisher's green cloth, spine lettered in orangish-yellow; top edge stained orange (faded); in original first-state dust jacket with the Kerouac quote on the front flap. Spine just barely askew; boards edges lightly worn on the bottom, with a couple bits of soiling, top edges very faintly dulled; corners of front board barely bent; very minor vertical scratch to the front board. Top stain faded; text block slightly sagging (potentially a manufacturing defect); trace foxing to the endpapers. Dust jacket with a nearly-five inches slice down the center of the front panel (no paper loss), with a smaller interior closed tear (approximately one-half inch) near the front spine fold; spine panel faintly dulled, though much less than often seen; edges and flap folds very lightly worn with a couple minor nicks to the crown and top of the front flap fold; rear panel with a short closed tear to the upper edge; light marginal soiling to the white background of the rear panel, beneath the author portrait; some minor spotting to the verso. A near fine copy in an attractive dust jacket with an unfortunate and prominent defect. Publisher's compliments card laid in.
