FIRST EDITION, THE DEDICATION COPY. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY PORTER TO THE DEDICATEE twice, once on the half-title: "Dear Barbara, here we / are, safe in port, / and we knew all along / we would get there, we / just didn't quite know / when or where - / But with my same / love, Katherine Anne / 27 February 1962" and beneath the dedication: "'In my end is my / beginning.' / Mary Stuart's motto." With a black-and-white photograph of Porter pasted opposite the "Characters" leaf, captioned Flemington [?], NJ, January 1964, presumably in Wescott's hand.
Barbara Harrison Wescott (1904-1977) was an American heiress and publisher. In 1930, she and her business partner, Monroe Wheeler, established a small publishing house in Paris. Harrison of Paris published two works by Porter, including Hacienda, the last book published by the press. The two were lifelong friends, as evidenced by the inscription under the dedication - and the dedication itself - "For Barbara Wescott / 1932: Paris, Rambouillet, Davosplatz, Salzburg, Munich, New York, Mulhocaway, Rosemont :1962."
Condition: Minor staining to cloth. Dust jacket unclipped ($6.50), minor edgewear and a few scuffs.
