Kahlil Gibran. The Prophet. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1923. First edition of one of the best-selling books of the twentieth-century. Octavo (8 x 5.25 inches; 204 x 135 mm.). 107, [4, blank] pages. With twelve illustrations after the artwork of the author inserted throughout. Publisher's full black cloth, front board and spine stamped in gilt, rear board with blind-stamped publisher's slug. Spine toned, some rubbing and light edgewear to binding, text lightly toned, a small paper blemish on page 89/90, not affecting text. Near fine.

This book has been in print continually since its first appearance in 1923, selling over an estimated 100 million copies worldwide (it has been translated into more than forty languages). This ranks Gibran just behind Shakespeare and Lao-Tsu as the most widely-read poets of our time. First editions of this book are rare, even more so in collectable condition.
