Signed and Inscribed First Edition of Catch-22

Joseph Heller. Catch-22. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1961.

First edition, first printing. Signed by Heller on the title page; additionally inscribed and signed by the author on a blank. Octavo. 443 pages.

Publisher's blue cloth over boards with white spine titles. Toning to edges of boards. Bumped corners with shelf wear, resulting in exposed boards with some fraying at tail of spine and boards. Slightly cocked. Top edge stained. Text block rubbed at tail with minor bumping to corners. Very small stains to fore-edge. Last signature riding higher than the block. Owner's brief pen markings about the novel on front free endpaper. Few pencil marks. Price-clipped dust jacket has bumping and wear to edges and corners. Light wrinkling and chipping to spine ends. Overall, a very good copy.

"There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that a concern for one's safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind. Orr was crazy and could be grounded. All he had to do was ask; and as soon as he did, he would no longer be crazy and would have to fly more missions. Orr would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didn't, but if he were sane he had to fly them. If he flew them he was crazy and didn't have to; but if he didn't want to he was sane and had to. Yossarian was moved very deeply by the absolute simplicity of this clause of Catch-22 and let out a respectful whistle."
