    More Information:

"Borges found inspiration for his pacifist utopias in the voices of H.G. Wells, Aldous Huxley and Bertrand Russell, who all rejected nationalism, racism and political oppression. ... In his review of Huxley's An Encyclopedia of Pacifism--a piece on the imbecility of war rather than on its criminal nature--Borges adheres to the idea that a social revolution cannot be achieved by violent means without ending in a dictatorship, as the French and the Russian Revolutions did. Along these lines, his articles published before and during World War II condemn the irrationality of promoting and enforcing violence and war. The fact that unexamined ideas and prejudices lead to deleterious social effects was for him most evident in the case of nationalism, defined as "a prejudice that all men suffer: the certainty of the superiority of their country, of their language, of their religion, of their blood." (-- Alejandra M. Salinas. Liberty Individuality, and Democracy in Jorge Luis Borges. page 49).
