Description

Signed Galley Proofs of John Updike's First
National Book Award Winner, The Centaur

John Updike. The Centaur. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1963. The rare original Galley proofs. Signed by Updike on the first leaf. Oblong octavo. Approximately 12 x 6 inches. [vi], 192 leaves (rectos only). Publisher's original plain spiral-bound wrappers. Pencil title and markings to front wrapper, tape residue to front and rear covers, some rubbing and mild creasing and sunning to covers, first few and final few leaves bumped at lower corner. Still, a fine example. Housed in a beautiful, custom-bound full brown morocco clamshell case. This was Updike's sixth book, his third novel, and the first of his novels to win the National Book Award for Fiction (in 1964 - he would win this prestigious award twice in his distinguished career). From the collection of I.D. "Nash" Flores III.
