Presentation Copy of John Updike's Rabbit, Run to Literary Critic Richard Gilman, Who is Quoted on the Dust Jacket

John Updike. Rabbit, Run. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1960. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by Updike on the front free endpaper: "for Dick Gillman [sp]/Best wishes/and good cheer/John Updike". Octavo. [viii], [310], [2, blank] pages. Publisher's green cloth backstrip over blue paper boards, front board stamped in silver, rear board stamped in blind, spine lettered in gilt and silver, dust jacket. Jacket spine a bit sunned, some edgewear, thumbsoiling, and a few tears (some creased) to jacket, minor rubbing to binding. Overall, a very good copy.
The recipient of this copy was well-known literary critic Richard Gilman (not "Gillman," as Updike has spelled it), who worked for Commonweal and New Republic. Gilman's blurb (written for Commonweal) appears on the rear jacket flap: "Turning on a narrow plot of ground, it achieves the rarity of bounded, native truth, and comes forth as microcosm." Although the blurb for this book is positive, Gilman would occasionally give negative reviews to Updike's later work.
