Beverly Farms, MA, August 15 [1995]. Approximately 8 x 5 inches. On plain white paper. With Updike's ink address stamp in the lower right corner. "August 15/ Dear Mr. Jemal: Thank you indeed for your gracious gift of the Buchanan pardon, which came magnificently packaged -- it took me hours to get it out of its garb of cardboard and bubble-wrap. Here is a much smaller present in return, a little Penguin I'm sure you don't have, for your impressive collection. Best wishes, John Updike [signature]". Note is affixed to front hinge.
