John Steinbeck. Tortilla Flat. New York: 1935 [though likely late 1930s]. First edition, second printing, variant issue by Viking Press.

    More Information:

John Steinbeck. Tortilla Flat. New York. Viking Press, 1935 (though probably 1936). First edition, second printing, unrecorded variant issue. Octavo. [2], [317], [1, blank] pages. Publisher's binding (nearly identical to the first printing binding of Covici-Friede) of full gray cloth, boards and spine stamped in blue. Publisher's dust jacket (nearly identical to the first printing dust jacket of Covici-Friede, except for any mention of their company is blacked-out and Viking's information is printed instead, and "Second Printing" is printed on the front flap). Cloth spine a bit toned; headcap mildly chipped; light rubbing to board-edges, small soil mark to front board; bookplate on title-page, covering the publisher's credit. Dust jacket spine a bit toned; some wear to spine and panels; some chipping and possible biopredation to spine, panels, and front flap with some loss of text and illustration; some wear, toning, thumbsoiling to jacket. Overall, a very good copy of this rare and unusual item, a possible trial copy. On the list of Steinbeck's books facing the title-page includes Saint Katie [sic] the Virgin, not published until 1936; this list isn't present in the first printing by Covici-Friede. Not in Goldstone and Payne.
